Depressed, deninitely NOT alone

Posted on Monday, 13 February 2006 12:03PM by Faye Orton
Reading through the mental health news, I found the following, which although is initially shocking in black and white, is not really shocking when you think about it.  In an average year how many times have you felt down, ill, depressed, hopeless, frustrated.  How many of our friends, neighbours and colleugues have felt the same way.  Out of these numbers, how many of us actually sought help?

"Mental illness affects over 27% of European adults every year, and is responsible for the majority of the annual 58 000 deaths by suicide, more than the number who die from motor vehicle traffic accidents. Moreover, mental health levels can have a significant influence on the economic and social welfare of society. Until recently, however, the importance of mental health has been largely overshadowed by other public health matters. The Commission is therefore initiating a wide ranging debate on the issue, to highlight the importance of mental well-being and to examine how best to develop a comprehensive EU strategy on mental health.

Markos Kyprianou, Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, said: “More than one in four Europeans suffer from mental illness every year, and it can cost our economies up to four per cent of GDP in lost productivity and other social costs. I can think of no other disease that would remain so low profile if such a high percentage of the population were struck by it. Mental health has been swept under the carpet for too long. It is a crucial component of overall public health, an important factor in societal well-being and a vital part of a competitive economy. The Commission is determined to raise awareness of this problem and to work towards improving the mental health of the EU population as a whole.”

Over 27% of adults in the EU suffer from some form of mental illness every year. Depression and anxiety disorders are the most common mental problems experienced, and studies have estimated that by 2020, depression will be the highest ranking cause of disease in the developed world. In terms of economic impact, mental ill health costs the EU 3-4% of its GDP through lost productivity and additional burdens on sectors such as health, education and justice."

Well I do think it is about time that we smashed the pride, stigma, or whaever it is that surrounds the area of mental health.  Some far off, disillusioned and dated belief that this area must not be spoken of, and the fear that we were going mad.  Poppycock.  We are more stressed than ever with increasing prices, increased work load and financial responsibilities, social unrest, over population, the age of materialistic possession and value on the 'bling' that you wear.  It has got to be broken, instead of the human lives that are getting broken.  We are all running around with not enough hours in the day with appearances to keep up and then not sleeping well when we do get to bed.  So what is the solution?  More drugs, sleeping pills, happy pills, further addiction and battle with our primary needs and instincts?  the solutions are all here at Healer Dealer.  Taking time out for the rest, recuperation, reavaluation and recovery that we all need to stay relatively balanced.  The 4 R's.

It is important to learn how to relax, to calm down gic=ving us the chance to perform better in our lives with far more serenity.  Learning also how to deal with the mental, emotional and spiritual trials that meet us on our life journey.  We cannot handle these things on our own, we do not have to, there is the help you need if you just take a few clicks to find it,  Find relief in a productive way that ends in liking yourself more.  It is socially encouraged and definitely accepted to use other methods to chill out, but we have all done these regularly and now feel even more burnt out.  Perhaps a holiday, but how many times have you got back from a holiday needing another one to recover.  Are you laughing at recognition of this.

You can get therapies and counselling and advice throughout the year at your own convenience and leisure.  It does not need to cost the earth and you will actually be multiplying the quality of your life considerably.  infact it will be less of a financial burden that ending up ill, losing your job and all the other things that mental health stresses and problems can lead to.  Many are under the term to receive through private medical health insurance
