COUNSELLING

Counselling explores the difficulties that a client is having, dissatisfaction with life, lack of life purpose and distress with physical, mental and emotional situations in life. The client nearly always approaches the counsellor, and the counsellor will provide a safe and confidential environment for the client to explore their personal difficulties.

Sometimes there is a specific issue that needs resolving or a change of perspectice of the current problem so as it does not affect the individual in a negative way.  A counsellor can also listen to your fears and can be confided in about issues that you need to talk about but do not feel comfortable doing so with family or friends for fear of gossip, hurting peoples feelings or whatever.  To be able to have an environment in which to vebt these feelings can be very freeing emotionally in itself in the confines of a confidential environment.

No one needs to know if you see a counsellor or not.  The counsellor will be discrete and only call if acceptable to you and would go to the extent of not approaching you in a social environment unless it was your wish, so as to keep your privacy and anonymity.

Counselling can be thought of advice giving and of guiding the client, but this is not neccassarily the case in black and white. Counsellors offer a two way exchange to support a client through their own problem exploration, understanding and resolution. The counsellor will not judge or make you do anything or cajole you in any way. It is not a one way situation of just listening. The counsellor will actively listen and use their experience and empathy to aid you in finding the answers and solutions. The solutions may already be in you, with talking about your problem, you can find these conclusions, you will have the time, space and support to do so. A counsellor will help the client look at a range of possibilities. It is the client who has the control of their decisions and their life but can discuss and then figure which is ultimately the best next step and decision or course of action for them to take. Self direction and freedom of thought and choice are the clients.

The following is a list of problems and issues that can be helped by seeing a counsellor. The real list is endless, but this will give you an idea. Counseling can help with all problems either as the primary sourse of help or as a complementary source of help. depending on the issue and the individual.

The benefits of good counselling have been recognised and proved to go a long way to help individuals who are suffering or in time of crisis. It is not a failure to ask for help, it is infact a huge step and a very positive one at that. We can tend to want to hide our problems. We may have been abused or bullied and remain fearful or to blame ourselves and thus not want to be honest about the situation. We may want to bury the feeling and experiences deep inside and not look at them in the hope that they might go away and yet we are depressed even shameful and may keep on getting ourselves into the same situations that are not going anywhere. You may be dissatisfied with where your life is. There may be circumstances where your illness such as alcoholism, addiction, eating disorders or whatever may keep you in denial or the thought that you will never be able to get better and that noone would want to help you are also common but ungrounded. You may suffer a bereavement and feel like you are alone and the only one. A counsellor can be there for you at these times as a great support and confident to adjusting to this different way of life and through the grieving process.

There are many different forms of counselling, and it is best to choose the right one for you. Many counsellors will practice a mixture of these principles, and they may well have overcome particular issues and problems themselves and have great experience of helping people in similar situations to yourself. It is important that you find the right counsellor for you and do not worry about asking questions. Many counselllors also now work through email and telephone and make appointments at their place of work or can come to your home. You can be flexible as to when you have your sessions and can fit them around your life and lifestyle.

Counselling is now more accessable and you can be reffered through your GP, or there will be a selection of different therapists that live close by to you. Now also with the power of the internet you can choose almost anyone anywhere after reading their profiles and principles.  Counselling can then be conducted through the internet and emails and telephone sessions.

Certain issues also have local organisations that have their own free counselling, for example for the victims of domestic violence and grief counselling, although there may be waiting lists and constricted session appointments.
