Health Advice and Information on InsomniaInsomnia Insomnia is defined as an inabilty to sleep or to get to sleep, causing lack of the required amount of good sleep. As we get older we require less sleep. Babies can sleep to upto 16 hours a day. Adults need, on average 7-8 hours a night sleep and the elderly 5-6. When the usual pattern of sleep deviates it can and will if it continues cause problems. The most common cause of insomnia are worry, and also stress, anxiety, alcohoism. Insomnia and thinking that one may not be able to get to sleep can be self perpetuating exasserbating the problem further. Environmental factors, such as noisy neighbours, hot nights, small children and babies can also cause lack of sleep. Too much food or drink, stimulants such as tea and coffee, and pain can also cause a restless night. Regular lack of sleep will lead to constant tiredness, daytime drowsiness, poor concerntration,, tension, irritability, depression etc. It can also cause a serious fall in perfomance in skilled tasks involving judgement and quick reactions such as driving. A few nights disrupted sleep although inconvenient can be caught up with after a few good nights sleep. It is worth recognising the things that may be the cause and doing something about it, drinking less, avoiding stimulants such as caffine etc. it is also very helpful to have a bedtime routine to prepare for a good nights sleep that may involve making the bed inviting and comfortable, a hot bath, lined curtains, warm soothing drink. It is wise in most cases to avoid day time cat naps too. If the lack of sleep is due to children or babies, if possible share the nighttime feeding and disruption with a partner, if this is not possible ask the help of someone understanding, maybe another close member of the family. Rest assured that this phase will not last forever. There are also 2 schools of thoughts as to whether to nap in the day when the baby is asleep. Although it may seem that this is a good time to get all the little jobs done. A short time meditating or infact having a nap as long as the child is secured in a cot may well be the time you need to recharge your batteries especially if you have no way of getting the extra support during the night.
