Get to Know Me #01My name is Matt Valentine and I am a Healer living and working in South Manchester. My professional background is originally in general nursing and special needs nursing in the community. I worked as a care worker and then a nurse in South Cheshire for 15 years, before doing my therapy, counselling and holistic training.

I qualified in Counselling and Therapy at Manchester University and South Cheshire College. After qualifying, I worked in primary care (NHS), the voluntary sector and private practice. This involved setting up two counselling services within the Health Service and co-ordinating them.

This experience and training helped enormously in 'grounding' some of my natural abilities and rooting them in the safety of professional boundaries. Being a natural healer - this is often needed!

From a very early age I have been meditating (although I didnt know this is what it was) intuitively and have always been deeply empathic. I have often struggled as a result and was bullied at school for being 'different.'

At age 25 I met my current spiritual teacher who has guided me ever since; offering explanations and more formal training for my intuitive skills and also helping to heal my own suffering. I firmly believe in 'the wounded healer' concept and know that without my own history, connecting with and helping others would be less effective and compassionate. Empathy, relational depth and true compassion can be great healers in themselves; even before therapeutic intervention has begun.

I also spend time in India each year, to support my formal counselling, therapy and healer training. I find India an inspiration and also a huge challenge, which again I find helpful in my work with patients. I learn new skills in India, from respected teachers and also 'fine tune' some old ones.

I am also a writer and artist. Creativity is very important to me as a person and I am happy to help you explore your creative side if you so choose. I also consider humour to be an essential part of our humaness and creativity - healing and change can be fun as well as hard work!

If you wish to know anything else about me before making your decision ; please feel free to ask. I wish you well and look forward to being of service.

    Grounded in Psychotherapy:

Academically I am grounded in the Humanistic and Person-Centred approach. This simply means that I have a solid basis for the healing work that I do - very important when in such a responsible position. A more detailed description of the various counselling approaches can be found at: www.bacp.org

Turning to The Body for Answers:

The way I work with the body and subtle-body is to bring bodily and energetic reactions into the awareness of my patient. This does not often involve physical contact; simple awareness of what is going on in our bodies can be enough to make huge steps forward. Research has suggested that 'the body remembers' traumatic periods in a person's life. Thus, it is a very effective tool in accessing a person's subconcious - where many answers and new ways of coping often lay.

This process can be a challenge and often distressing as accessing hidden trauma in the body can bring to the surface memories/senses/feelings that you thought you had dealt with.
