Psychotherapy and counselling
Life can sometimes seem very complicated, and while we may be surrounded by different ways to communicate, we can still at times feel very much on our own. At different stages in life we all experience dilemmas or emotional difficulties that we feel unsure about, or unable to tackle on our own. In many instances family and friends may be able to help. There are times however, when we want to have a more objective view of what is occurring. This is when therapy can be particularly useful.
Therapy can give us the space and time to think.
Talking through problems and dilemmas, and having someone impartial to think about these things with you, can bring about a sense of relief or clarity. It can also help you to develop an insight into what may be occurring and why. This can, in turn, provide the potential for greater self awareness which may bring about change or understanding.
In working together with you, a trained and experienced therapist can support you in thinking about what may be taking place, and identifying why it may be happening.
"In actively thinking about the way we feel, we create the possibility to be who we want to be."
Purpose of therapy
People using Counselling and Psychotherapy bring a wide variety of different types of issues and emotional dilemmas. It might be because of things that occurred in the past or about uncertainties in the future. There is no right or wrong type of problem, it is more important that you feel the need to attend to something that is troubling you and that you would hope to gain insight into.
People come for a wide range of reasons and some of the types of issues that people have found therapy helpful for are:
- Resolving difficulties with relationships or family concerns
- Overcoming childhood issues or distressing past life events
- Dealing with anxiety
- Making sense of a lack of motivation or depression
- Overcoming feelings of worthlessness or despair
- Finding ways of coping with issues around fertility or parenthood
- Supporting you through life changing events or work difficulties
- Gaining a sense of purpose or belonging
- Enhancing self awareness and building self esteem
- To build confidence and achieve your potential
Intercultural therapy
An intercultural approach to Psychotherapy and Counselling recognises that for many people, questions of belonging, identity and culture are at the forefront of our experiences of the world. For some this can be about fulfilling the expectations placed upon us by family and society. For others it is a question of understanding who we are and where we belong in an increasingly complex world. Our cultural and social background can play an enormous part in how we feel about ourselves, and at times, how others see us.
The Therapy Practice embraces these complex issues and recognises that social ideas, identity and culture play an important part in helping to shape all our lives.
"Everyone has a culture. Through our background, our community, or our individual experiences, we all wonder how the world works and where we fit into it."
Making an appointment
Please phone the Practice for an appointment on:
0207 686 3887
This is a confidential answer service and your call will be returned promptly.
You will be offered an initial consultation. This consultation appointment will help to define what the issues are, and whether counselling or psychotherapy is the right course of action for you at this time. If, together with the therapist, you decide to proceed, you will be offered a series of appointments that are agreed between you both.
Consultation
At the first consultation session you will be able to discuss in detail your particular requirements and what will be the best way forward for you.
Sometimes people want a focussed series of sessions. This can be especially helpful if you are facing a particular dilemma or problem that you feel stuck with. Generally a series of twelve sessions can be helpful when wishing to focus on a short term problem.
At other times people have more deeply rooted issues and would like a longer term or open ended arrangement. People entering therapy often recognise their own need for support over a longer period. This is quite usual and can be discussed in more detail with the therapist at the consultation appointment.
Sessions last for fifty minutes and take place at the same time each week. Most people attend once or twice a week.
